Les Andelys (France)
From a chalk outcropping high above the Seine, Chateau Gaillard dominates even the picturesque scenery that surrounds Les Andelys and the Seine Valley. Built in the 12th century by Richard the Lionheart, the monumental castle formed part of a defensive system to protect the Normans from the French, Scenic, river-side Les Andelys is also home to Notre-Dame, a late Gothic and early Renaissance church boasting remarkable stained glass windows.

Caudenbec-en-Caux (France)
In and around Caudenbec-en Caux, the Seine meanders through protected forests and orchards, through a landscape dotted with the ruins of abbeys founded by Benedictine monks in the 15-17th centuries. From here, you can visit the cloister at Fecamp where in 1510 monks first distilled Benedictine, an elixir made from twenty-seven plants and spices-and, of course, sample the drink that Francois the First declared his favourite.

Rouen (France)
Rouen's own Notre Dame, considered Frances's greatest late Gothic cathedral, inspired countless paintings by Monet. However the city also lays claim to another famous Frenchman, Gustave Flaubert, born there in 1821. Flaubert wrote Madam Bovary at his home, in nearby Croisset, on the banks of the Seine. Wander cobbled streets, covered alleys and cross the old market square to visit the Joan of Are Church, consecrated on the spot where she was burned at the stake in 1431.

A compelling marriage of old and new, scenic Vernon delights the eye.
