River Vessel Listings

There is some variety in the length and beam and height of river cruise vessels, although these differ according to the rivers on which the vessels will operate. This is due, in part, to the restrictions placed on a vessels are built on a monohull.

At present, only one vessel in Europe has two hulls (Viking Primadonna), while one vessel has a monohull that has two sets of bows that give the impression of having twin hulls (Mozart). While twin hulls mean that there is more room because the vessel will by necessity be wider than average, the problem of having such wide vessels is that the hull must flex more to accommodate the strong currents and water movements encountered in some parts of the river. Most vessels designers would, therefore, prefer to stay with the conventional monohull that is found as the base for most of the river cruise vessels in the world today.

Design Characteristics. Because of the necessity of their long, “low-slung” design, river cruise vessels have only a limited amount of space for public areas. There are, basically only two major public rooms aboard those plying the waterways of Europe and Egypt, the dining room and the main lounge. However, in these two areas, there are several variations and differences between vessel designers (such as where to place the bar, and perhaps a small dance floor and baby grand or upright piano), and the degree of comfort and user-friendliness built into the design.
